St. Isabel of Portugal

We honor the memory of St. Isabel of Portugal today, July 4th, this great Queen-Mother-Wife. She was born in Spain, 1271. Marries King Denis from Portugal at the age of 12. Suffers because of her husband's unfaithfulness, yet raises two of the king's illegitimate children plus her legitimate ones. As a queen, she was able to build up orphanages, shelters, hospitals, and a convent for girls. Story says that her husband, king Denis, found her once while she carried some bread for the poor on her cloak. When asked what she had, she opened it and roses appeared. Thus, she's depicted holding roses on her cloak and a piece of bread on her right hand.

She prayed earnestly for the conversion of her husband and God granted her this favor. Other miracles were attributed to her, especially curing the sick she cared for. She is also known as a Peacemaker. While there were many conflicts among the royal family between the king, nobles and the king's own legitimate son Alfonso, St. Isabel was God's instrument in bringing them to the table for conflict resolution and dialogue. She rode on a mule, without weapons, through the midst of her husband's and son's armies to ask them to stop... and they did. This stoped a prominent Civl War and the division of the Royal Family. Thus, she is the patron saint for peace.

As we celebrate our 250th Anniversary as a nation, the opening prayer for mass today centers us back to the Source of all Goodness, our Heavenly Father. It states, "Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what we have achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessing with all the peoples of the earth. Through Christ our Lord. Amen." 

What does it mean to bring peace nowadays? Pope Benedict XVI (R.I.P.) wrote as follows:

Today’s pastoral priority is to make each Christian man and woman a radiant presence of the Gospel perspective in the midst of the world, in the family, in culture, in the economy, in politics. Often we are anxiously preoccupied with the social, cultural and political consequences of the faith, taking for granted that faith is present, which unfortunately is less and less realistic...

Dear brothers and sisters, dear young friends, Christ is always with us and always walks with his Church, accompanies her and guards her, as he has told us: “I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Mt 28:20). Never doubt his presence! Always seek the Lord Jesus, grow in friendship with him, receive him in communion. Learn to listen to his word and also to recognize him in the poor. Live your lives with joy and enthusiasm, sure of his presence and of his unconditional, generous friendship, faithful even to death on the cross. Bear witness to all of the joy that his strong yet gentle presence evokes, starting with your contemporaries. Tell them that it is beautiful to be a friend of Jesus and that it is well worth following him. With your enthusiasm, demonstrate that, among all the different ways of life that the world today seems to offer us – apparently all on the same level – the only way in which we find the true meaning of life and hence true and lasting joy, is by following Jesus.

PUDO MÁS PORQUE AMÓ MÁS

Escolástica, hermana de Benito, dedicada desde su infancia al Señor todopoderoso, solía visitar a su hermano una vez al año. El varón de Dios se encontraba con ella fuera de las puertas del convento, en las posesiones del monasterio. Cierto día, vino Escolástica, como de costumbre, y su venerable hermano bajó a verla con algunos discípulos, y pasaron el día entero entonando las alabanzas de Dios y entretenidos en santas conversaciones. Al anochecer, cenaron juntos. Con el interés de la conversación se hizo tarde y entonces aquella santa mujer le dijo: «Te ruego que no me dejes esta noche y que sigamos hablando de las delicias del cielo hasta mañana.» A lo que respondió Benito: «Qué es lo que dices, hermana? No me está permitido permanecer fuera del convento.» Pero aquella santa, al oír la negativa de su hermano, cruzando sus manos, las puso sobre la mesa y, apoyando en ellas la cabeza, oró al Dios todopoderoso.

Al levantar la cabeza, comenzó a relampaguear, tronar y diluviar de tal modo, que ni Benito ni los hermanos que le acompañaban pudieron salir de aquel lugar. Comenzó entonces el varón de Dios a lamentarse y entristecerse, diciendo: «Que Dios te perdone, hermana. ¿Qué es lo que acabas de hacer?»

Respondió ella: «Te lo pedí y no quisiste escucharme; rogué a mi Dios, y me escuchó. Ahora sal, si puedes, despídeme y vuelve al monasterio.» Benito, que no había querido quedarse voluntariamente, no tuvo, al fin, más remedio que quedarse allí. Así pudieron pasar toda la noche en vela, en santas conversaciones sobre la vida espiritual, quedando cada uno gozoso de las palabras que escuchaba a su hermano. No es de extrañar que al fin la mujer fuera más poderosa que el varón, ya que, como dice Juan: Dios es amor, y, por esto, pudo más porque amó más. 

A los tres días, Benito, mirando al cielo, vio como el alma de su hermana salía de su cuerpo en figura de paloma y penetraba en el cielo. Él, congratulándose de su gran gloria, dio gracias al Dios todopoderoso con himnos y cánticos, y envió a unos hermanos a que trajeran su cuerpo al monasterio y lo depositaran en el sepulcro que había preparado para sí.
Así ocurrió que estas dos almas, siempre unidas en Dios, no vieron tampoco sus cuerpos separados ni siquiera en la sepultura.

CREATIVITY Vs. Waste of Time!

Wasted time is not a prized commodity in American society. We are a people ruled by the clock. Time is money because time is to be filled with purposeful controlled activity which is productive of things which can be sold. We are convinced that we must be in control of time. The last thing the productive American would want to do is waste time playing around with realities that do not produce a saleable commodity.

But the Creator of heaven and earth is described by the scriptures as the original and the best of players. Creative activity is playful, and creative people do not feel that what they do is a job. Creative people also have a sense that their creativity and all that they fashion in the creative spirit are gifts they have received. The Christian can speak of this and the contemplative vision which sees all reality as gift of grace. Our thankful response we call worship or eucharist.

La Esposa es el Sol de la Familia

La esposa viene a ser como el sol que ilumina a la familia. Oíd lo que de ella dice la sagrada Escritura: Mujer hermosa deleita al marido, mujer modesta duplica su encanto. El sol brilla en el cielo del Señor, la mujer bella, en su casa bien arreglada.

Sí, la esposa y la madre es el sol de la familia: Es el sol con su generosidad y abnegación, con su constante prontitud, con su delicadeza vigilante y previsora en todo cuanto puede alegrar la vida a su marido y a sus hijos. Ella difunde en torno a sí luz y calor; y, si suele decirse de un matrimonio que es feliz cuando cada uno de los cónyuges, al contraerlo, se consagra a hacer feliz, no a sí mismo, sino al otro, este noble sentimiento e intención, aunque les obligue a ambos, es sin embargo virtud principal de la mujer, que le nace con las palpitaciones de madre y con la madurez del corazón; madurez que, si recibe amarguras, no quiere dar sino alegrías; si recibe humillaciones, no quiere devolver sino dignidad y respeto, semejante al sol que, con sus albores, alegra la nebulosa mañana y dora las nubes con los rayos de su ocaso.

La esposa es el sol de la familia con la claridad de su mirada y con el fuego de su palabra; mirada y palabra que penetran dulcemente en el alma, la vencen y enternecen y alzan fuera del tumulto de las pasiones, arrastrando al hombre a la alegría del bien y de la convivencia familiar, después de una larga jornada de continuado y muchas veces fatigoso trabajo en la oficina o en el campo o en las exigentes actividades del comercio y de la industria.

La esposa es el sol de la familia con su ingenua naturaleza, con su digna sencillez y con su majestad cristiana y honesta, así en el recogimiento y en la rectitud del espíritu como en la sutil armonía de su porte y de su vestir, de su adorno y de su continente, reservado y a la par afectuoso. Sentimientos delicados, graciosos gestos del rostro, ingenuos silencios y sonrisas, una condescendiente señal de cabeza, le dan la gracia de una flor selecta y sin embargo sencilla que abre su corola para recibir y reflejar los colores del sol.

¡Oh, si supieseis cuán profundos sentimientos de amor y de gratitud suscita e imprime en el corazón del padre de familia y de los hijos semejante imagen de esposa y de madre!

La Mirada de Jesús

Hablando de san Pedro, el Papa Francisco nos dice: "Pedro reniega de Jesús tres veces, precisamente cuando debía estar más cerca de él; y cuando toca el fondo encuentra la mirada de Jesús que, con paciencia, sin palabras, le dice: 'Pedro, no tengas miedo de tu debilidad, confía en mí'; y Pedro comprende, siente la mirada de amor de Jesús y llora. Que hermosa es esta mirada de Jesús - cuánta ternura - ... No perdamos nunca la confianza en la paciente misericordia de Dios" ... "Dejémonos envolver por la misericordia de Dios, confiemos en su paciencia que siempre nos concede tiempo; tengamos el valor de volver a casa, de habitar en las heridas de su amor dejando que Él nos ame, de encontrar su misericordia en los sacramentos. Sentiremos su ternura, tan hermosa, sentiremos su abrazo y seremos también nosotros más capaces de misericordia, de paciencia, de perdón, y de amor".

De vez en cuando, dar un paso atrás nos ayuda a tomar una perspectiva mejor. El Reino no sólo está más allá de nuestros esfuerzos, sino incluso más allá de nuestra visión. Durante nuestra vida, sólo realizamos una minúscula parte de esa magnífica empresa que es la obra de Dios. Nada de lo que hacemos está acabado, lo que significa que el Reino está siempre ante nosotros. Ninguna declaración dice todo lo que podría decirse. Ninguna oración puede expresar plenamente nuestra fe. Ninguna confesión trae la perfección, ninguna visita pastoral trae la integridad. Ningún programa realiza la misión de la Iglesia. En ningún esquema de metas y objetivos se incluye todo. Esto es lo que intentamos hacer: plantamos semillas que un día crecerán; regamos semillas ya plantadas, sabiendo que son promesa de futuro. Sentamos bases que necesitarán un mayor desarrollo. Los efectos de la levadura que proporcionamos van más allá de nuestras posibilidades. No Podemos hacerlo todo y, al darnos cuenta de ello, sentimos una cierta liberación. Ella nos capacita a hacer algo, y a hacerlo muy bien. Puede que sea incompleto, pero es un principio, un paso en el camino, una ocasión para que la gracia del Señor haga el resto. Es posible que no veamos nunca los resultados finales, pero esa es la diferencia entre el jefe de obras y el albañil. Somos albañiles, no jefes de obra, ministros, no el Mesías. Somos profetas de un futuro que no es nuestro. Amén.

Life's Rebirth & Conversion

To learn a lesson is to become mindful, once more, of the goodness of life that offers itself to us, releasing an energy that runs even deeper than the unavoidable experience of loss, that need to be elaborated and integrated in the meaning of our existence.”

Evangelize w/ Holy Spirit

"We are called to evangelize and to be evangelized, but it is always the grace of the Holy Spirit that fuels the conversion... God is present in every life, whether we recognize it or not. He is present in those who are in our parishes and those who are not, those who pray with us and those who do not, those who think as we do and those who do not. In all our interactions with others, we can bring Christ to them, but we can also acknowledge Jesus, who already dwells in their hearts and who is a gift to us too. It is a gift of giving and receiving. But, to do this, we need to make sure that we are growing in our friendship with Jesus Christ and his Body, the Church"

Test of Three

In Ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said:

“Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?”

 “Wait a moment,” Socrates replied. “Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Test of Three.”

 “Test of Three?”, the acquaintance asked.

 “That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my student let’s take a moment to test what you’re going to say. The first test is Truth. Are you absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

 “No,” the man said, “actually I just heard about It.”

 “All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second test; the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?”

 “No, on the contrary...,” the acquaintance replied.

 “So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him even though you’re not certain it’s true?”

 The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

 Socrates continued. “You may still pass though, because there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?”

 

“No, not really.”

 “Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why should you tell it to me at all?”
